WHO IS ANDREW BACKHOUSE?

I’m an artist based in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, working across collage, music and photography to explore the relationship between time, memory and place. Influenced by hauntology, my work draws on archival material, found imagery and everyday scenes to reflect how the past continues to echo through the present.

I was born in East Anglia to English and Scottish parents, and spent much of my childhood moving around the country with my family. That early exposure to different landscapes and communities shaped my belief that creativity is deeply tied to place – and that even the most ordinary surroundings can hold hidden stories.

My collage practice reworks historical prints, ephemera and illustrations into layered compositions that question how we construct history. In parallel, my photography captures moments of quiet disruption in familiar settings – from faded shopfronts to uncanny architecture – revealing the ghostly traces of forgotten futures.

Alongside my visual work, I present regular radio shows across several stations and have a background as a dub producer, with five Beatport top-10s to my name. These experiences feed into my interest in rhythm, texture and atmosphere – qualities that also shape how I build images.

Through everything I make, I’m looking for ways to slow things down, make space for reflection, and invite a second look.
