A quick update regarding collages

I think I’m done making digital collages.

It’s strange to type that out. For the past few years, they’ve been my go-to thing. A reliable outlet, a habit that somehow turned into a style, then into a pattern, then into something that felt more like a box. At first it was exciting-pulling scraps from nowhere, stitching them into something that half made sense, half made nonsense. But lately, every time I opened the files, it felt like walking into a room where the furniture can’t be moved anymore.

That’s not to say it was a waste. Far from it. Those years making collages were good years. I learned a lot about layering, about seeing connections where none were obvious, about trusting the accidents. But in the end, the thing that used to feel wide open started to feel like a cage. I wasn’t experimenting anymore, just circling.

So I’m pressing pause. Or maybe I’m closing the book. Or maybe it’s just one of those natural endings that only feels sudden because you notice it all at once.

What comes next-I don’t really know. I did a photography course recently and that’s been rattling around in my head. Maybe I’ll pick up a camera more often, maybe I’ll chase something new. Or maybe I’ll just wander for a while without making anything visual at all. That’s a little scary, but maybe the pause is part of the point.

Digital collages got me this far, but now it’s time to step off that track. I don’t know what the next one looks like, and I suppose that’s the good news.
