Saint Wilfrid's Church, Harrogate

I photographed Saint Wilfrid’s Church in Harrogate as a quiet act of walking, waiting and looking, letting the building reveal itself through light rather than description. The temporary lighting installation by Allan Smyth Audio Visual, created to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War, became my method as much as my subject, washing the stone in colour and shadow and loosening it from everyday time. Working slowly and at night, I treated the church as a threshold space, shaped by memory, loss and civic ritual, where past and present briefly overlap. The images are not records of an event but traces of an atmosphere, attentive to what lingers in the architecture, the streets around it and the silence between illuminations.
