It was my birthday this weekend – it was a good one, thanks.
I managed to have my first lie-in in of 2024 and now feel rested. It took Kathryn until 11:30 to wake me; it was time to wake up by then, although I did not want to.
We watched some of the 6 Nations, and I winced at every tackle. Kathryn gets far more out of watching sports than I do; I am just there for the ride – she invests time and energy into them.
England won. France won. They were good games, I think.
We went to Devonshire Taphouse after tea – we got there just after nine-thirty.

It was great to catch up with Kathryn. We spend so much time living in each other’s pockets that we sometimes find it hard to take stock. It was also good to support an independent venue and have a few choice beers.
I realised Kathryn has sacrificed a lot to be with me – a debt I struggle to repay. Either way, I need to make sure she is happy. Something I am quite good at is that she laughs at my jokes, which is pretty much our relationship’s backbone.
Allan and Evie, his youngest daughter, joined us at the Dev for a few beers. We were joined at the bar by John E. He is a good lad – always sensible banter and a level head. I pushed my luck a bit, talking about music (something very close to both of our hearts). But we left on good terms.
I am now staring my latest year in the face and have never felt more confident about taking it on.
